cal rents that flow into Egypt on account of its geopolitical importance in
the Near East amounted to US$2.5–3 billion in the form of routine pay-

US$2 billion from the Suez Canal revenues, US$2.5 billion from the export
of petroleum, US$3.7 billion from foreign tourism and US$4 billion from
the remittances of Egyptian workers abroad, one gets a figure of about
US$15 billion, which constituted 65 per cent of the state budget in that
year (see Wurzel 2001: 13).
