One of the most noticeable Egyptian traits

One of the most noticeable Egyptian traits is their devout-
ness. Every city and large town has a skyline that includes
domes and minarets (towers), the characteristic architectural
forms of the mosques where Muslims worship. Five times
daily, including at dawn, a call to prayer issues forth from the
minarets. Muslims may go to the mosque to pray, and most
do on Friday, the Muslim holy day, or they may pray in their
homes, offices, or along the street. Prayer is one of the five
pillars, or requirements, of Islam. The others are the profes-
sion of faith, which requires Muslims to recognize that there is
only one God, known as Allah in Arabic, and that the Prophet
Muhammad was God’s messenger; to give alms or charity to
the poor; to fast (abstain from food and drinks) from dawn to
sunset during the month of Ramadan; and if one is physically
and financially able, perform the pilgrimage (hajj) to the Saudi
Arabian city of Mecca.
