The Sinai Peninsula and the Suez Canal Zone
The granite horst of Sinai divides the northern part of the Red Sea graben
along two lines: the Gulf of Aqaba and the Gulf of Suez, with the Sinai Pen-
insula, which covers an area of 61,000 km2
, in between. In its southern part
(see Illustration 1), which consists of the Basement Complex, we find Gabal
Katharina (2,635 m), Egypt’s highest mountain. In the sixth century Emperor
Justinian had St Catherine’s Monastery built at its foot. Today it belongs to
the Greek Orthodox Church and is inhabited exclusively by Greek monks. It
has been a place of pilgrimage throughout history, especially for believers of
