In the
latter, hotels and camps built mostly for domestic tourism, as well as gated
communities for the well-to-do people of Cairo for weekend use, compete for
space with the new port, constructed here because the port facilities at Suez
were no longer sufficient. A new, fast road was built along the coast, and the
road through the desert to Qena and Luxor in the Nile valley was improved,
so that these two important centres of tourism could be reached more easily.
A day trip to Luxor is now possible from the Red Sea coast.
