The Suez Canal Zone forms a marked border area between the thinly
populated Sinai deserts and the green Nile delta in which the population is
concentrated. Three urban centres have developed in this zone since the con-
struction of the canal in the mid-nineteenth century. They are the capitals of
the governorates of the same names: Port Said, Ismailiya and Suez. The Suez
Canal Zone suffered severely during the Israeli bombardments in 1967 and
1973. Since the 1980s it has seen strong economic development. Suez is today
the third-most important location for the petrochemical industries after Cairo
and Alexandria. Ismailiya, with its historical colonial town and green alleys, is
