The production of salt for local household consumption takes place around
Lake Maryut, Lake El-Bardawil and Lake Mansala. In 2000/01 the production
of table salt amounted to 2.578 million tons (ibid.). Because of severe pollution
of the lakes by various industries and agricultural as well as household waste
water, the quality of the salt is below the desirable standard and represents
a serious health hazard for the Egyptian population.
The production of manganese on Sinai was interrupted by the Israeli–
