taking over as successor. Gamal Mubarak is seen by many as an
ideal successor, and he would be the first civilian head of state
if indeed he becomes president. But it is unclear if he would
be interested in the job; on more than one occasion, he has
indicated that he has no desire to assume the country’s highest
office. The future of the Egyptian government could fall on the
shoulders of the Muslim Brotherhood, if it is able to replace the
National Democratic Party headed by President Mubarak.
