Palm-tree roots stripped of topsoil: After the construction of the Aswan High Dam
no more Nile silt, which had for thousands of years been used for brick-making in
Egypt, was deposited along the river. Nevertheless, many farmers who were in need
of money sold the fertile, but now unrenewable, topsoil of their fields to the brick
factories. The picture shows the result of this harmful practice through which the
upper roots of the palm trees have been stripped naked. The making of bricks from
Nile silt has been illegal in Egypt since the 1980s. (Photo: F. Ibrahim)
