Finally, another important Islamist group influencing
Egypt’s politics is al-Gama’at al-Islamiyya. This group is not
necessarily connected with the Muslim Brotherhood; rather,
it is composed of a newer breed of Muslim leaders who repre-
sent a generation that has experienced more of the Mubarak
regime than of Nasser. Unlike the Muslim Brotherhood, which
seeks political legitimacy and tolerance with the entire Islamic
world, al-Gama’at al-Islamiyya is more radical. In fact, on
several occasions the Muslim Brotherhood has condemned its
actions, especially the 1993 assassination attempt of an Egyp-
tian government minister.
