The use of Nile water in Egypt before the construction of Es-
Sadd el-Ali
In Egypt the cultivation of grain was already known 9,000 or 10,000 years
ago (Schoske et al. 1992: 15). With the increasing aridification of the Sahara
during the Holocene the Egyptians started settling permanently in the Nile
valley and cultivating there, tilling the soils of the alluvial plain. When the
land was still wet after the annual flood had receded, the farmers planted their
crops. The earliest mention of basin irrigation dates back to the Ninth/Tenth
Dynasties (2234–2040 ). The topography of the Nile valley was well suited
to the construction of large irrigation basins: long natural dams on both sides
of the river separated it from the lower parts of the alluvial plain which in
normal years was completely flooded seasonally.
