The Nile Valley
In the narrow Nile valley 48 per cent (2002) of the Egyptian population are
concentrated. Here lie the governorates of Cairo and of Middle Egypt: El-Giza,
Beni Suef, El-Faiyum and El-Minya, as well as the governorates of Upper Egypt:
Asyut, Sohag, Qena, Luxor and Aswan. As a rule, all nine governorates south
of Cairo are subsumed under the term ‘Upper Egypt’ (see Chapter 11).
