Increased production of summer crops The area utilized for the cultivation of
rice increased by about 23.5 per cent between 1960/64 and 1988/92. During
the same time the area planted with maize shrank by 13.2 per cent (Simons
1977: 574; CAPMAS 1993: 43f ). The per hectare yields of rice increased by 18.5
per cent and those of maize by 117 per cent, which can be partly attributed
to the availability of more water for irrigation of the old agricultural land,
but also to the Green Revolution in Egypt, which was made possible by it.
