from the Arabian Peninsula. This was Islam. Its followers,
called Muslims, practiced a religion revealed to their prophet
Muhammad just a few decades earlier. This faith is described
in the next chapter. The Muslim army easily defeated the
Byzantine forces defending Egypt and settled in for a rather
peaceful and tolerant administration of the country. The
Arabic-speaking Muslims did little to try to convert the local
Coptic Christians and allowed them to run most of their own
