Food
Almost every Egyptian has a sweet tooth. Even a cup of tea is
prepared with a few heaps of sugar. The country’s most widely
consumed foods are boiled fava beans (fuul) and deep-fried
chick peas (taamiya). Western fast-food restaurants, including
McDonald’s and KFC, are common in the bigger cities, but the
traditional Egyptian fast foods are fuul, taamiya, and kushri,
a spicy macaroni and lentil dish. Meats are too expensive for
most people to consume frequently, but popular meat dishes
are made from lamb or mutton and include shawarma—grilled
lamb served with tomatoes on a hot bun.
