Egypt’s Water Resources and Water
Demand
§ backbone of Egypt’s agrarian economy today – just as in ancient
times – is the availability of sufficient amounts of cheap water for irrigation
purposes. In this respect Nile water is still of prime relevance in spite of the
discovery of the Eastern Sahara Basin with its huge groundwater reservoir. So
the government’s master plan for the use of water for the year 2000 shows
a near-complete dependency on Nile water for its great land reclamation
projects (Ministry of Information 2000: 70ff ).
