Egypt’s ethnic population is fairly uniform. The largest
group, of course, is the Egyptians, who comprise 98 percent
of the nation’s population. Other groups include Berbers,
Nubians, Greeks, and Armenians. Cultural interaction with
Europe and Africa has had a profound impact on Egyptian
ethnicity. In the northern coastal towns of Cairo and Alexan-
dria, European influence is widespread. Contact with Greece
and Rome, and later France and Great Britain, have made
Egypt very cosmopolitan. In the southern part of the country,
a large proportion of the population is Nubian. Approximately
75 percent of the Nubian homeland is in Sudan, but many
Nubians relocated to southern Egypt—around the Tosha
lakes and Lake Nasser region—in search of agricultural lands.
Aswan and Abu Simbel, located in the Upper Egypt region, are
Nubian settlements.
