Egypt: an economic geography The people of Egypt · 25
Since Egyptian Muslims and Copts have largely the same ethnic origin, they
cannot be differentiated according to physiognomy. However, the ancestors of
the Egyptian Muslims may have intermarried with other Muslims who came
to their country, like Arabs, Turks and Mameluks who migrated from Asia
to Egypt. The Copts, on the other hand, remained by and large ethnically
unmixed. So, neglecting the minor influences of the Greeks and the Romans
who ruled over Egypt from 332 BC to AD 641, one may consider them the
direct descendants of the ancient Egyptians.
