During the 2005 parliamentary elections, the Muslim Broth-
erhood captured several seats in Parliament, which assured that
Mubarak would face opposition for the first time since he be-
came president in 1981. Although Mubarak was reelected in
2005, less than 25 percent of registered Egyptian voters turned
out for the election. Surely more will participate in the next
presidential election in 2011, when Mubarak seems likely to
support his son Gamal for president.
