A special type of desertification in the extremely arid Western Desert is
the encroachment of sand sheets and sand dunes on arable land, settlements
and infrastructure, especially in the oases (see Illustration 4). These almost
purely natural phenomena are hard to combat. Establishing living and non-
living windbreaks may be helpful against blowing sand sheets, but is hardly
effective in stopping the rapidly advancing barkhan dunes.
